Childhood memory

I was looking for a book in my library the other day and to my wonderful surprise I came across a book " A Treasury of the World's Best Loved Poems" I sat back and just started reading some of the poems. Then I came across one of my all time favorite childhood poems....this poem I read to my girls time and time again...I remember we had this beautiful book just for this Poem, the pictures were so magical...it got to the point where my girls and I would recite part of the poem in an almost musical fashion. The name of this poem.....

The Owl and the Pussy-Cat

by Edward Lear

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went sea In a beautiful pea-green boat; They took some honey, and plenty of money Wrapped up in a five-pound note. The Owl looked up to the stars above, And sang to a small guitar,

"O lovely Pussy, O Pussy, my love, What a beautiful Pussy you are,

You are, You are!

What a beautiful Pussy your are!

Pussy said to the Owl, "You elegant fowl, How charmingly sweet you sing! Oh! let us be married' too long we have tarried: But what shall we do for a ring?" They sailed away, for a year and a day, To the land where the bong-tree grows; And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood, With a ring at the end of his nose,

His nose, His nose,

With a ring at the end of his nose.

"Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling Your ring?" Said the Piggy, "I will." So they took it away , and were married next day By the turkey who lives on the hill. They dined on mince and slices of quince, Which they ate with a runcible spoon; And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand, They danced by the light of the moon,

The moon, The moon,

They danced by the light of the moon.

I smiled the whole way through typing this poem. I started looking at the words and I could hear my mothers British accent, she would use words like this all the time. I honestly can't remember if she ever read this poem to me or my girls...but I know she plays a roll in my enjoyment of this poem.

Lear wrote many whimsical poems

The Owl and the Pussy-Cat was written in 1871. If you would like to find out a little more about Edward Lear or read a few of his poems thisis a good site.

Really enjoyed reading this - looks like something I'll have to try to track down and get for the granddaughter here as I think she would really enjoy having it read to her.

I don't remember this poem at all...unfortunately I don't recall my mom ever reciting poems or bedtime stories to us. I guess with 5 kids, 2 boarders and my gran all living there, she didn't have much time! lol Plus, we spoke French at home so whatever books were read were all in French:-) Hugs xox

Oh man are you going to get lots of visitors using the word pussy. Giggle.
Don't recall that poem, but appropriate for today. Hubby and I got married this day 28 years ago.

My children loved this one also.
They also enjoyed Wynken Blynken and Nod. (They were both in the same storybook)

This is a favourite of mine too!
I remember doing a picture of it in one of lessons at school.
Then in High School i think we had to do a limerick based on his ideas.
A lovely reminder.
Its a mega popular one here in the UK.
Did i read right that your mum is British?

RN, I remember that one from my childhood and loved it too. However, from my feline perspective, relationships with birds are overrated. :-)

Oh thats cool! Did you go out for a drink in Liverpool Town Centre?
You will have to tell me when you are here and will go for a pint.
Mum with a U is the only way it makes sense!
A small small world it is!
