All Aboard!!!

In my last post I was telling you about my adventures on the mainland with my girls. Well in order for me to get there and back I must take a ferry. The ride is 35 nautical miles or for those of us that don't understand nautical miles it is a 1 1/2 hour ferry ride. BC Ferries has a fleet of 35 ferries with the largest ferries being 560 feet(imagine 2 football fields)they carry 2100 passengers and 461 vehicles. The shortest is 111 feet carrying 133 passengers and 16 vehicles. If you are interested in ferries you can find out more about the fleet here and here. Below are some photos I took when I was leaving Horseshoe Bay on the Mainland and going back to Departure Bay, on Vancouver Island.

Leaving Horseshoe Bay Terminal

These mountains are part of the Coastal mountain range. There is a road called the "Sea to Sky" highway which will take you to Whistler, an international ski resort. This is where, downhill, snowboarding, cross country events will take place for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
That line just up from the houses is the "Sea to Sky" highway. You will have to take that road if you want to get to Whistler to ski or take in any of the downhill and Nordic events for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
This a sample of some of the multi million dollar homes around Horseshoe Bay area, this particular home has it's own dock and passage leading to the water.
I thought this picture kinda cool. The only way to get to this place is by boat. In the hazy background is Downtown Vancouver. That is not pollution you see it was low clouds.

That long stretch of land is part of Vancouver called the University Endowment Lands. The University of British Columbia is located up there. This is also considered a posh area of Vancouver, with the majority of residence being doctor's, lawyers and university professors. Around it's distant point you would come to Richmond where the International airport is and further along is the Tsawwassen Ferry terminal which brings people from Victoria which is the capital of the province. Not far from there are the San Juan Island group which is the gateway to the US. There is a little place there called Friday Harbour which is the border crossing.

Entering the Departure Bay terminal on the island.

Those pillars and the small building in the back...that is the terminal....and now I am back on the Island, only 45 minutes from home!

Mary Anne, what an absolutely FABULOUS post...!!! It's about time someone did a post about the wonderful trip between the Island and Vancouver, and you did such a good job of it. Amazing. I haven't been on the BC Ferries for quite a while. I'm going to have to take a trip on them.

What beautiful pictures!

Cheers,
Josie

Oh, Heavens, you didn't steal my thunder...:-) You did a way better job than I could have done, with your photos that you took first hand. I love it!

Which mall did you go to? I was at Metrotown on Saturday. Maybe we passed. Wouldn't that be funny!

Did you click your heels together three times and say, "There's no place like home, there's no place like home." And, now you're home in your lovely nest with your wonderful husband.

I loved the travelogue. I have never been in your neck of the woods but would certainly love to after seeing the beautiful landscape. I can imagine that you will be first in line for those Olympic tickets in 2010!!!

Have a great day, friend.

Here is sit in little old land-locked Pennsylvania and down in a gully between two Pennsylvania-type mountains and through your tour, I get to see Vancouver and other parts of your world. Since I am realistic enough to realize I will never get to visit your area - or others that are so beautiful - it's so great to be able to see these places from the eyes of someone who obviously loves and appreciates the beauty of their home. Great job, really terrific pictures, descriptions and explanations.

Beautiful is not expressive enough. We ride the U.S. ferries across Pugent Sound a lot and I take photos most every time. I heard your area was beautiful as well, you just confirmed it. My husband needs to hurry up and renew his British passport so we can try out your ferries.

There's a ferry that runs from Cape May, NJ (about an hour from my house) to Delaware, my family went on it quite a few years ago...was pretty cool though I get sea sick so after about twenty minutes I couldn't wait to get off.

Beautiful photos and it makes me long to return to Vancouver! Does the ferry dock near the cruise ships terminal??
(Can't remember exactly. I confuse Seattle and Vancouver in my mind as we've sailed from both)

What a wonderful armchair journey! My mom and dad loved that area, though they waited until I got married to make the trip...
I love the sea and the pines and the clouds. I could pack up all I own and be there in a split second...

That is a beautiful black and blue bird you got pictured under the provincial flag top right: what is it?? I noticed you like Ian Rankin. He's brilliant isn't he? I like Harlan Coben as well. This is a beautiful blog you've got here. I love your photos. I do one too. But it has no pictures. You're most welcome to visit my blog too btw: gledwood2.blogspot. It is pretty different from yours though....

Anyway here's wishing you all the best

I love taking the ferry.
I mean, yes it is expensive and everyone complains, but for the scenery ALONE it is worth it.

I love the trip between Saltery Bay and Earles Cove on the Sunshine Coast...that has to be some of the most amazing scenery EVER.

Probably why most of our vacations either take us up the coast or over to the island. Spent a few trips in your neck of the woods over the years!....Oh and why haven't you emailed me about WetCoastWomen? I want to see you posting there!!!
