Just a quickie......

Just a quick note....I am running late....dang. Have to make sure I make it to work on time today. I generally am early but this morning I have to make a quick stop on my way to work. Speaking of work. I had a call from my work yesterday asking me if I wouldn't mind orientating a new RN. Orientate and new RN.....of course I would. Wow more staff.....I would orientate a dog if he had the skills to do what we do. But seriously, we currently are short staff 2 full time lines and one part time line and are in desperate need of casual workers as well. So finding someone to come work is fabulous. With summer coming up we are always short handed as staff are taking vacation. It's a never ending issue right now. We are always under staff. There just aren't enough of us out there. I have worked more overtime this year already than I did all of last year, and it wasn't looking like there was going to be any reprieve in sight. With the recent Spring break a couple of the staff had their holidays interrupted because management couldn't fill their need. That's awful as I know they have tried but from a employee stand point when you can't get your vacation when you ask really sucks. It's like why on earth do I work full time if I can't get my vacation? Then at the end of the year they say use your vacation up or we will have to pay you out. Oh it is all so frustrating. Those of you who are nurse out there know exactly what I am talking about.

Anyhow, I am happy, we are getting new staff. Hip Hip hooray!

Have a grand day all!

I hope you find more nurses to sign on....you have a very heavy workload.....and it is emotionally and physically draining for you and the other nurses (I know from reading your posts). But those of us who have been patients, do appreciated all the nurses do!

Hugs my friend!

I know, all too well, the issues of having to cover shifts when you are in a 24/7 type of business - doesn't apply only to medical care there as food service often has the same problems. However, sometimes people who have little to no prior experience can be hired and trained in food service whereas in hospitals, they have to have degrees and be licensed, etc. But it all gets complicated -regardless of the setting - when the workers lives outside of work are configured into the mix too. It's difficult thing to have to provide coverage round-the-clock, year-round for all concerned.

I do hope you get some extra help there!

I also wanted to say that when I was in the ER last week with dehydration I really and truly saw the nurse as a person. Someone who had another life away from the hospital. That's because of you!

We are really short staffed at my job as well, and then the people who are offering to do overtime to fill in the empty shifts...well, they aren't too dependable either. Hopefully things start looking up for both of us in that regard.

Congratulations on the extra help. There is a huge nursing shortage in this country (as I am sure you know) and what is worse is that there are people willing to step up but just not enough (or big enough) facilites to teach them. This is going to be a huge problem in a few years.

By the way, is this a Pay Per Post?

Hey Dirk.....no this is not a Pay per post.....I think you were trying to be funny....right?....humour sometimes it just goes right over my head. But really on a serious side of things....the nursing shortage is a huge problem as it is becoming in many other fields...I'm just happy we are getting some relief....but you know I guess this topic would make a good PPP......

Mary Anne, there is such a shortage of nurses in British Columbia. I'm always happy to hear that more are being hired.

Take it easy...

My cousin is a Nurse at a major hospital in our neck of the woods and she is always working overtime. She loves it (for the money). She is pregnant now so I am sure that will change in a few months! Keep up the good work, we do appreciate it!

My husband's neice is an RN and I talk to her often...she's always saying how short staffed they are so I guess it's a problem everywhere. I still say you nurses don't get paid enough for everything you do!! Glad to hear you'll be getting an extra pair of hands to help out. Your weekend with your girls sounded like a lot of fun...yup chocolate chip cookies make a good breakfast! hehe Take care my friend! xox
