It's Herring time.....

The other morning I posted pictures of the Sea lions and mentioned that the sea lions return when it is close to the herring fishery opening.

This morning on my way home from work I happened to glance out at the water and saw the boats starting out for the fishery. It was raining and rather miserable. Here are some pictures of the boats and their skiffs being towed behind. For those that don't know, the skiff's are used to bring in the herring.

As I was watching the ships, I noticed the seals following the boats, they were bobbing up and down. To fast for me to get a picture. They know where the food is going to be.

There's just something so soothing and calming about watching these boats go out. I have always loved the water and boating I guess that is way I am drawn to living so close to the sea.

After havng made this post, hubby had to go to town. He took the camera and now I just have to edit this post to include some of the photos he got. These photos show you the herring fishery in action as well I have included a little 40 sec. video he took with the camera so you can get a feel for the surroundings.

These are the skiffs I was talking about, you have to have your sea legs for this job.

These photos are taken just from shore in my town. Dark and dreary isn't it. Not sure I would want to be out there today.

Great pictures these are! Too bad you couldn't get some of the sea lions running about as well. Maybe later?

OK, you followed me home to spank me for my feline proclivities with the quail, but I get to eat the fish, right? ;-)

Great pics!

well, there's definitely no water near us... not like that anyway. our "sights" include horse-and-buggies.

but when i've been out vacationing near big lakes & oceans, i really did enjoy seeing the boats out there.

That's a sight we don't see here in my neck of the woods! I was watching a documentary the other day about boats going out to catch crabs and/or lobsters out east..not a very easy job at all! I imagine catching herring is all done with nets and such as well? Love that close up picture of the boat!!

Variety they say is the spice of life.

While you share you photos I can almost feel the salty mist on my face.

I think I must be a dreary creature at heart...I love walking along the shore on days like this - as long as I have on the proper clothing! I love overcast days at the beach. We honeymooned in December in Monterey and drank hot buttered rum. It was a wonderful time, honeymoon aside ;^)
Your espouso's video was very good.
