I gave him the 5 minute warning...he proceeded to tell me he had a few more minutes. I had all the candles lit....the fire was roaring....it was really rather romantic....all we needed was a nice bottle of wine....but since we didn't have any wine Soda and Crystal Light were the beverages of choice. It's 8:00 pm PST lights were out....hubby comes into the living room.....so now what do we do he says....I said we could play cards.....or chat.....chat he says....about what....I said tell me a story.....he couldn't think of one....the man who is full of stories couldn't think of a story....so I started in...talking about some of my life adventures...things I have done over the years....things that I have felt proud about....accomplishments...times I really enjoyed...it was while I was recanting a childhood memory that I heard this "gurring bubbling flapping" sort of noise coming from his direction, I looked over only to realized that my story was so stimulating that hubby had proceeded to fall asleep. At 8:40 he woke up and said is it time yet.....I laughed....only 20 mins to go..., it's 8:59.....hubby awakes...it's time....he grabs his lap top and starts googling....I turn on the TV, I opted to leave the rest of the lights off and candles lit....oh did I mention it had started to snow around 7:00 pm? Well by 9:00 pm it is snowing heavily...and I mean heavy, it was that wet big flakes kinda of snow.....it was pretty but hey it's the end of March we are not suppose to be getting snow!
It was 9:30 and I was in the washroom when the lights started to flicker....hmmmm. They go out momentarily then come back on....flicker again....come back on.....flicker one more time...and they are out, thank goodness I still had candles going in the washroom. Hubby got a good chuckle about me being caught in the washroom with the lights out....I told him I had candles which gave the room some ambiance....LOL. So there we were ready to settle into our routine of watching some Saturday night TV and hubby playing on his computer...but no it was not meant to be. So now what....hubby decides it was time for some dessert so off to the kitchen for him....I sit on the couch contemplating my options....I really don't have enough light to read, knit or do much of anything....I was feeling tired and had a headache so I opted to make it an early night.
I hadn't lit any lights up stairs, I generally have my night lights...but with the power out it was pitch black.....we keep a flashlight in our room just for these occasions(we get a lot of power outages here) I managed to make my way into our room, I found the flashlight on our dresser, I turn it on to help me find my way around the bed ....I get all settle in.... I hadn't been there more than maybe 5 -10mins at the most, when I heard this crash downstairs...it sounded like a candle or something had fallen over. I call out to hubby...no answer, I call again...still no answer...so with my trusty flashlight in hand I make my way downstairs...again calling out for hubby no answer. I get to the bottom of the stairs and start looking around I notice Bert who generally greets me at the bottom of the stairs is no where to be found either....I check every room in the house both for hubby and for what was the cause of the crash...I make my way back to the living room and through the window I see a light out in the shed..it's hubby. We have three of those portable shelter tents...with the heavy snow hubby was out there pushing the snow off of the tent roofs. I don't know why I didn't hear him leave the house....I generally hear everything. So now I have found hubby, but still I haven't found the source of the noise. I search some more. Finally, I find the culprit there on the floor was a candle, not lit of course....hmmm .... to strange .... I look at where the candle landed and where it came from, that was a long ways for it to fall.....I wondered how it could have fallen from the holder(which I had reinforced that morning)across the table, missed landing on the chair but behind the chair.....hmmmm....very strange........does anyone remember me telling you about the laundry soap incident, this reminds me of that incident. Hubby comes into the house we chat..he said "I thought you were going to bed"....I told him what happened...he makes spooky sounds at me and laughs....I get a blanket and curl up in the Lazy boy chair and nod off.
At 1130 the power comes back on......hubby is sound asleep on the couch.....my neck has a bit of a kink in it from the way I was sleeping in the chair....I get up to go around make sure everything is off and candles are out, I head upstairs to my bed....it's ok now I have my nightlights on....I'm a big girl now....I can do this.
So there you have it our Earth Hour......what did you do for your Earth Hour?

So, you still don't know what the crash was or how the candle got there? Was it Bert?
We did it too! Yay!! I did leave the baby's music on, because he's going through another adjustment period and his sleep has been disrupted too much lately, but we did it.
So are you going to give this ghost a name?
Unfortunately we were eating out!
That's a great story. I really laughed at your husband falling asleep during your story. I know that I would never fall asleep reading your blog because you express yourself so well. This post ended up as a cliffhanger. I was so afraid someone was hurt so I'm glad that wasn't the case. I enjoyed earth hour. I especially enjoyed not turning my TV or computer on all of Saturday. I did end up listening to Prairie Home Companion on my battery operated radio when I first turned my lights off about 15 minutes before 8:00 pm and during earth hour I listened to Back porch music - a show on the same station (local show on our public radio station).
Misty....Bert was outside with hubby....yes I am thinking of giving this ghost a name....I mean after the picture coming off of the wall...the laundry soap...the back door opening and the sounds of hubby coming home(but no hubby)...oh I could go on....yes I think if I give it a name it might just settle down...but hey...then what would I have to talk about?
I love your ghost.
No one wanted to do it when I asked last week but since they never pay attention I just tripped the breaker and told them it was going to take some time to fix.
Made me chuckle and they managed to survive without TV. Will wonders never cease.
I actually forget all about it because I was sitting in the dark watching a dvd. I always turn out the lights anyway and lower the heat simply to save $. Loved the story of your evening - how romantic that he fell asleep. Oh well, means he's so comfortable with you. And you were a good sport not to wake him up. How is your neck doing? Call the ghost "Casper" and he'll know you mean to co-exist in a friendly way with him/her.
By the way, there's an award for you at my place. Come and get it! ;D
Hi, Smalltown! I haven't been over here in a while--or much of anyplace else lately! I chuckled at your story. Didn't even know about Earth Hour. Must pay more attention! You sound happy. Good!
Donnetta
I live earth hour here so that puny effort didn't mean much to me. And my neighbor Helen is even better at it than I am, she sits in the dark all the time for hours on end and is the most wise and cheerful woman I know.
Okay, she is the best woman I've ever known. Her electric bill never goes over thirty bucks a month, what is your electric bill?
I heat with electric heat so mine can get up to eighty bucks for one month in the winter, in the summer it's always under 35 bucks.
I heard about it and total forgot about maybe such things I need to post on a calender.
But I like your story about your earth hour and anther one I read hope to read a few more.
Great story Mary Anne. You had a double Earth Hour - the one you started and the power one LOL.
I went to bed an hour earlier - does that count? :)
ew, I hate hearing crashes and such at nighttime. Especially when you can't locate where it came from.
Because the night before, I had another really loooonnnngg night -up all night off and on with a fussy baby -I couldn't stay awake Saturday if you'd paid me and I fell asleep on the sofa around 4-5 p.m so was sound asleep by 8 p.m. Slept right through it but unfortunately, I'm pretty sure, with the two little ones here and Mandy didn't have work that night, that the lights and tv were all on, as well as Mandy was probably playing on the computer. I had never mentioned anything about it to her.
I heard about "Earth Hour" on the news but then fogot the all about it when the time came. I think it's a great idea! I'd certainly have a glass of wine ready if I did it ;-)
I loved the picture below of your parasailing! You are very brave to do that --it looked like so much fun!
Hugs, Pat
What are we going to name the ghost??? Gary the Ghost? George Ghost?
By the way, sorry for the spam but I'm helping Barb/Skittles let everyone on the Heads Or Tails blogroll know that HoT has a home of its own! You can find it HERE.
See ya on Tuesday!
At 7:59, I turned out the lights and promptly went to sleep. :-)
Yeah.....I kinda cheated....lights were off, but the computer and TV was still on. I'm blaming it on my teenager though, she was watching TV. LOL
Sorry to say I didn't participate. I conserve always so my one light where I was sitting with my knitting would have been a drop in the bucket. Candles kind of scare me so I only use them when the power really goes off...ciao
I didn't participate in this either. I had 2 little ones here for the night and that was bath time and getting ready for bed time for them. Hard to do with the lights off. I did turn the TV off though and the computer, but I couldn't go without lights!
Hugs and this is for a good cause.....maybe next year I can join in!
Hi Smalltown; What a wonderful story, gave me a good laugh.
I don`t think we do Earth Hour in the UK, if we do, I havn`t heard of it.
I do like candlelight and try to do a special meal, for us quite regularly.
One night we had some friends round for supper, when we were suitably repleted with several drinks, I accidentally set fire to a kitchen cupboard. Managed to extinguish it without causing major damage. Needless to say Husband always 'tuts' when I light the Candles, adding, "Hmmm it`s going to be one of those nights, is it" ?
Needless to say, he enjoys the food and wine and chats then 'crashes out' on the sofa. What is it about Men, TV`s and Sofas ?
Love your Parasailing Pics, what a Gutsy Lady you are !
Di.
P.S. you are now on my favourite blog sites.
We did Earth Hour here at our condo in Bellingham. It wasn't a big thing either in the papers or on the news like it was in Powell River.
Sitting in in the dark in front of the fire (yes, romantic) really made me aware of all the excessive street and business lights. I wish I could have been at home in Powell River. I know there would have been more of a citywide effort. Restaurants were even advertising candle light dinners.
I could identify with your story about hubby falling asleep. My husband and I used to read to each other at night. The reader always found the other nodding off after about three pages. It sure took us a long time to finish a book, but it was lots of fun. - Margy
