Well I finally did it. Last week I went and saw the optometrist and had my eyes checked. Since November I have noticed my eyesight gradually getting worse....I need the light on over my computer and sometimes even the over head light...my eye sockets ache like crazy...and headaches...driving at night is very uncomfortable...and by the end of the day all I want to do is close my eyes and give them a rest. It seemed like it came on all of a sudden, but hubby tells me he has noticed my deteriorating eyesight for awhile. I was getting fearful tha
t there might be something else going on. I have had a variety things going on with me and in isolation of each symptom I can rationalize each and every symptom. My eyes for example....I must admit...I am getting older...46....urgh...only 3 years ago I had my eyes checked by the opthamologist who told me I had perfect vision. So I was fearful that something else was going on. In hind sight I realize that poor vision runs in my family and that I should consider myself thankful that I have held onto my eye sight for as long as I have. After a very detailed examination I am told I need glasses. Glasses you say....is that all....nothing else....just old eyes...that's it.....yippee!!! It's funny how we can take our sight for granted, thinking it will always be there for us. I know I shouldn't have been excited about getting the glasses but it was such a relief to know that there was nothing else going on to cause my eyes to be as sore as they were and for the increase in my headaches.
Anyhow...now they got me.....the optometrist wants to do one more test, she puts drops in my eyes, that make my pupils HUGE!!! eventually I can't really see a thing. But while the drug is taking effect they take me out to the area where they have all the frames .....I have to pick a frame. The clerk picks up a pair and I try them on....they looked pretty good...or at least I thought....we tried on at least 15 others...but I was drawn to the first pair, of course I was.....they were the designer pair....$364 for the frame alone. I tell them I need to wait for my hubby to return to make sure he likes them on me. Seeing as I have to wear them all the time, I thought it would be important that he liked them on me. He did...until we saw the price...then came the lenses....over $600 for the lenses.....oh my god....how can that be....they are just a little piece of glass....and that is the problem, small frames, small lenses, and because I am getting progressive lenses there is a lot of adjusting that needs to be done for the lenses to fit the frame. I didn't realize that at the time.
I wasn't thinking properly, I think those drops they put into my eyes gave me brain freeze and I didn't realize what I had just purchased. I put a 50% deposit on the frames and lenses that on top of the $120 for the examination. Anyone doing the math out there.....yes....it was a very expensive afternoon. But they get you don't they. Never having worn glasses...not knowing what to ask or what was a reasonable price etc. and feeling stunned about getting them in the first place and the drops in my eyes making me feel all goofy....oh just bad judgement or lack of judgement on my part. The next day when I went to go see my sister and I told her about my glasses and what they were charging me....she was shocked as was her roommate, they both wear glasses and told me they have never ever paid that kind of money. I called the shop to cancel my order, they said that they had already placed my order and that my prescription had already been started. It all seemed pretty fishy to me. As most of you folks who wear eye glasses know you can get frames and glasses in a hour....so I ask you why is this place taking 10 days for me to get my glasses if they had already started my order? Seems odd don't you think......
Well I had them fax my prescription to me so I could do some shop comparison....I haven't yet....I am putting it off as I don't want to get depressed when I find out I shouldn't have paid so much. Lesson learnt.....the very hard way......
I share this with you all as this is part of the reason I haven't been around visiting as often....being on the computer is really bugging my eyes....but by the end of this week I should have my new goggles that only cost me my first born, and will be surfing the blog world to check up on you all......cheers....

Welcome to the "Four-Eyes" Club, Kid! I've worn glasses for over 50 years now- since I was 12 years old. My last pair that I go this spring, because I have vision care with my insurance, cost me a total of $75! In the past, without insurance, I have paid as high as almost $200 and that included the eye examination too. Don't they have a law in Canada -they do in the states -about purchases, over x-amount of money(I think $50, or something like that) you can cancel/change your mind within three days and no penalty?
Also - e-mail me so I can write back to you off topic here with some questions for your husband about internet provider stuff. Thanks, kid and take good care of those glasses now - get a separate insurance policy just on them against breakage and such!
I'm new stopping by your blog. After wearing contacts/glasses for more years than I can count....let me just say, comparison shop! It does make ya sick after making an expensive mistake like that but we do live and learn the hard way.
Good luck with the glasses! =)
I bought frames online once and saved a pile of money. If your not a bifocal stage, it's super easy to get lenses and frames cheaper online.
I to the trifocal stage.
Well, you did pretty good in the years before getting glasses... 46 is awesome... I have had them since 21 years old.. LOL.
But I use contact lenses as much as I can... I hate glasses, they always get in the way of everything I want to do, sliding off the nose, fogging up when I come out of the cold, sports, swimming, etc.
But gosh, glasses will change your life! You will get less headaches, eye strain, everything will feel refreshed in life. As far as cost, it does seem a little pricey. I've shopped at several places here in BC and I think the most I've ever paid for glasses in a good frame, lenses with the "special coating", blah blah... about $350. I dunno, designers are expensive though.
I am sure you will enjoy them but the important thing is the prescription, as long as it helps your eyes feel better.
Take care!
Michele
Wow..lots of money for spectacles. I wear glasses/contacts and the combined price of them is less than half of what you paid.
Next time, you'll know. Damn, I hate learning the hard way though.
take comfort my friend - I did the same thing with my first pair. they somehow convinced me that the designer frames were the only ones that looked good on me. I've learned since then, been wearing reading glasses for about 10 years. Currently I have 2 pairs for reading and one pair for distance (which I rarely need). I tried progressives but they do not work for me. The 3 pairs I have now cost less than my first pair. As you said - we live and learn.
Enjoy the new glasses! The money is spent so might as well just be fabulous in them.
Yes, they were a little pricey......but you will be able to see better and the headaches won't be as bad and if you really liked them and they make you feel better about wearing glasses, perhaps the price was well worth it. After all, they are something you will be wearing every day, so you might as well really like the way they look.
I need to go and get my eyes checked again too. It's been over 4 years now and I know my lenses need to be changed!
Looking forward to seeing a pic of you in your new eyewear!
Hugs, my friend!
I've been wearing glasses since I was 8, my eyesight is horrible.
I think the worst part of the exam is the eye drops. It's pure hell trying to do anything about they're put in...all you want to do is go home, turn off the lights and sleep until it wears off.
Oh how true this is . I have been there for awhile.lol.
I get my glasses at the optical place in the Super Store grocery store. They are about half the price if not cheaper.
oh dear... hang in there.. rest your eyes
Your sight is a pretty important thing - it a good investment. Next pair will be even better and maybe cheaper.
Sorry to hear about this RN. I've been in glasses since I was three. Actually I think it's time I had a checkup myself.
I was 48 when I started needing glasses for reading and close work.
But I just get by with cheap reading glasses. I have a pair with big lenses that stay on my computer desk and are only used for when computing as they are just right for that.
The rest of the time I wear glasses with 'half' lenses so I can look over them.
As long as this works for me I won't bother with an optometrist, may have to someday though.
I hope things work out for you. You've been on my mind a lot lately.
I've needed glasses for computer and reading for a good few years - now I think I need to wear them all the time! My eye test is due in June - I'll let you know.
Show us what you look like in the MEGA EXPENSIVE glasses when you get them. :)
well I am glad to hear that the vision issue caused the headaches- that is good news....phew....
Now about Glasses ( I have had them since I was 5, and I too am in my 40's...and contacts since I was 10...I was part of a Study at Hopkins...because my eyes kept changing ...anyways I love my glasses...)
Okay....I confess I go to Walmart...and I wait for sales..... I never ever go to small shops- they charge too much and have limited selections...
I don't know if there is one near you...
( but I paid much less than you...about under 200 for frames and about 300 for the lenses- progressives...this is my 3rd year with these glasses- and sigh...they are elegant- Sophia Lorens....the only designer thing I own....ever)
I wish you the very best...enjoy them...
Oh, you sound like me: take two symptoms and I'm wondering what people will say about me at my funeral!
I really object to having to wear glasses. It's an age thing for me too and to not to be able to read print on tins or instructions makes me so cross!
