Storm season is upon us.....

Yesterday was stormy......very stormy....winds in some areas up to 130km/hr.....I was working nights...one of the day staff called early to invite me to sleep at her home...she didn't want me to drive home. I thanked her and told her if I can make the storms of last year I can certainly see my way through this one.

Little did I realize what I was getting myself into. I leave the hospital...I felt like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and the storm....it felt like I could be picked up and flown away.....and I am no light weight. Anyhow, I make it to my car....the winds are blowing the raining is coming from all directions and it is falling hard.
I make my way out to the main part of town, when only just in the distance there is the loud pop their is a big flash of light and the all the lights go out....no stop lights, no street lights, nothing....I continue on. I drove another 5 mins only to hear another pop and flash and then no lights. It was crazy.

My ride home takes me along the water.....ocean to one side tall cedars on the other...or sometimes both.....the wind is blowing the rain is coming in off of the water.....the waves are high and rolling....the birds are loving it. I continue on...the wind making my car sway at times.....tree branches are falling in front of my car....some hitting my roof....I forge on. I get to a little community, of course there is no power......trees have fallen on the lines....for about 3km the trees are on the lines. I continue on.....I get to one of my favorite places that I have talked about called Rosewall Creek....I am about 15 mins from home at this point, but I can't go any further. A huge cedar is down right across the road...there is no getting around it.....I have to turn around travel 15 kms back in order to get up to the upper highway so I can make my way home. I am exhausted at this point. Just coming off of a 12 hour night shift and I am already an hour into my drive home.
I make it to the highway....the winds seem like they are at gale force, the highway is of higher elevation .....trees are down along this highway as well....but because it is the main highway on the Island it is maintained fairly well. I finally make it home...about 40 mins later than usual and extra 45km added to my drive because of the detour. I get to our drive and make my way down..only to see the carnage the winds had on our place....the vehicle storage tents have been blown away....stuff is strewn all over. I get inside only to discover that our power is out....they power was out for about 9hrs. Thank god for our generator, and fireplace...we managed to stay warm and have coffee. The power came on in time for me to shower and get ready to go to work.
I am hoping this isn't signs of things to come this season. I really think I need to trade my Mustang in for a truck.

Wow!! We didn't get the wind at all last night, but I sure did see the lightening and hear the thunder!

Glad you made it home safe and sound!

Yeah, gotta agree with you -hope it's not an omen of things to come cause you know how generous you Canadians are -always sending your bad weather east to us! Just glad you got home safely! I've had drives home from work that took me a little over two hours to make a 35 mile drive but that was from heavy snowfall and mountainous terrain. Still -I don't like thinking about what's to come.

I am so glad you made it home ok. I was reading the entry with fear and then I realized, she had to make it somewhere or she wouldn't be blogging about it. Sometimes I'm a little slow. Take care, Carver

Great ocean photos. The ocean scares me and a trip like you had would really scare me. You be careful.

It really has been bad lately and like you, hope that we're not in for it again this year. A beautiful mature pine tree cracked in two here, just outside my gate. I was so shocked! Take care driving home at night!

I'm glad you guys are okay. That's one thing I hate about winter, the storms. Do you live on Vancouver Island. I was there once. It's beautiful.

Yeh, heard about the storm all over the TV and the radio. We were hit amazingly with high winds out here in the Kootenays as well. That was a surprise. Not sure if it was related or not but sheesh. What a powerful storm indeed! It happened in the night and trees and branches snapped out here as well but not to your extent. Mother Nature was not kind to BC that day.

good thing you made it home ok! we don't usually see storms here in northern california though we did have major lightning cpl weeks ago. it was strange to see and hear it here. there was a story about girls having soccer practice down the road at the park and it hit the ground near them and gave them a little shock. i had mentioned to my girls, when i picked em up from the library, that that seemed close but a random person said it wasn't that close. i wonder if he read the news article the next day? i saw it touch down, i was sure of it...the article proved it.

That sounded like really hard work, especially after a day at work!

The waves in the ocean are very beautiful to look at.......would not want to have to drive near them, especially on a trip home after a 12 hour shift!

So very glad you DID MAKE IT. You be careful my friend.......I can't afford to lose another one!

After reading that, I'm reminded of that scene in Armageddon when Owen Wilson asks Billy Bob Thornton:

"Ok, Mr. Truman, let's say that we actually do land on this. What's it gonna be like up there?"

Thornton: "200 degrees in the sunlight, minus 200 in the shade, canyons of razor-sharp rock, unpredictable gravitational conditions, unexpected eruptions, things like that."

Wilson: "Okay, so the scariest environment imaginable. Thanks. That's all you gotta say, scariest environment imaginable."
