Why is it that when the thought of Christmas rolls around we start to think of renovations.

Hubby and I for some time now have been talking about doing some much needed renos to the bathroom. We have never liked much about the bathroom, but when the tile around the tub started to give way...we decided that now would be the time to make the much needed changes. Little did we realize what we were in for.
A few weeks back we went out and bought the tile for the tub and flooring, but just hadn't found the time to get the project started. But on Sunday, my first day post night shift I decided was the time to get the project started. Like any renovation the only thing you can be assured of is something going wrong. I was in charge of hammering and removing the tile from around the tub. The first tiles came off relatively easily. It was when I got to the side wall that I realized that the tile wasn't coming off as freely. It turns out that the wall hadn't been prepared properly and and as a result, the gyproc was coming off with the tile...and not just a little, but in chunks. Oh well hubby says...he wanted to replace that anyhow he says. Next thing you know we are down to the plastic and insulation. We decided that seeing as the facets had been leaking that now would be a good time to change them....so we went and bought new facets.....but then...well the tub was scratched and tarnished because of the leaking facet so we decided we should replace the tub as well. Now this is where the fun begins. Out comes the tub...only to find the plumbing needs to be replaced. This 2 day job is really taking on a mind of it's own. Currently we have no tub or shower....the old tub is out in the back of hubbies truck and the new tub is in the middle of the hallway getting fitted with it's new plumbing. Hubby spent most of the day working on the plumbing...only to find that he needed some extra parts. So at 5 mins to closing time hubby needs to go to the hardware store. Thank goodness he made it. He was hopeful that the tub would get installed tonight...but no such luck. Again, one task has lead to another..so we will go without the tub for another day.......hmmmmm
I am optimistic that the bathroom renos will be done for Christmas....that would mean the flooring being done...new granite counter tops...new light fixtures....sink and toilet...and then painting....hmmmm.....have we taken on to much?....but we can't stop now...it's onward and upwards.
So what about you....do you have a reno nightmare story you would like to share? And do any of you out there have the answer to the question ...."why do we start renos just before Christmas?"

sounds like our bathroom reno! except ours wasn't planned, we had tiles fall out of the shower and there was no wall behind them lol! and its the number 1 reason why dh refuses to let me gut our downstairs bathroom lol!!
hope the rest of it goes smoothly and quickly!
It seems to be the most common plague known to all homeowners - start one little thing and three or four or ten or more others will fall apart and land on your head all at the same time! I hate to think of the uproar it will bring, but we're going to have to put in a new floor in the bathroom here -and I'm sure, after that there will be the wall around the tub/shower will need to be redone -and who knows what else will be next in line to blow up on us.
Last night -Mandy washed a load of heavy-type clothes, put them in the dryer and loaded the washer with more of the same. When she went down to get the clothes out of the dryer she discovered the element was shot! So she had to run two big loads of laundry to her best friend's house at 10 p.m. to get them dried. Today -we have clothes over every available radiator in the house and hanging on hangers above the radiators and all over the place! What fun! So Friday she's made arrangements to buy a reconditioned dryer from an appliance guy in town. When it rains it pours you know!
Nice blog you have here.
I used to do remolding, carpentry...good luck with the bathroom.
Perhaps it's only because we just moved into our house a couple of months ago, preceded by much renovation, but we're certainly not thinking of more. We still have some touching up to do, in fact. We were fortunate, we had some slight mishaps, but nothing major.
On of those jobs you wish you'd never started eh?
Good luck getting it finished for Christmas. :)
Our dining room needs redecorating but we've decided to do it in the New Year.
Thanks for stopping by and your comments on Maya and her achievements of late. The show of affection -which has been really slow in coming around with her, is sooooo great to see, to receive the hugs, kisses and now, to here her verbalize this too -just not enough words to describe the feelings, ya know!
Wow, look at you go! I'm impressed.....all that chipping away. Can't wait to see the "after" photos.
Sorry to hear you aren't able to take the courses you wanted to in January. Yes, getting a degree is painstaking, and it must be even more overwhelming when you've already been out in the workforce as a nurse. Sigh. The things we must go through, hey?
Just wanted to make sure you're ok with me adding you to my links list.
I think it looks great just the way it is--LOL--but I seriously think we all get the bug to do something creative and new around the holidays. I love the pictures!!
Wow, well, there's something to be said for renting!
Call the landlord!!
Good luck, too. I hope nothing else rears it's ugly head!

We've had a small leak at the top of our water heater for sometime. J has attempted repair without success twice. He has promised it will be done while I am away this week. So far, he has had problems. Tomorrow is Friday and I am going home saturday. He has the heater drained. I am so sure he'll have it ready before I arrive.
Mama Bear
I just realized that you're from BC. I'm from NB. I've been to Vancouver 3 times, it's a beautiful place. It's nice to find another Canadian blogger.
Isn't that the truth...not only do we start such projects right before Christmas but one thing always leads to another and it becomes a major job!! Our upstairs bathroom needs to desperately be completely redone...NO WAY am I starting on it now!!! lol Good luck! xox
good luck with that!!!! you're inspiring me :)
Funny how bathroom remod's seem to grow bigger!
Don't know how I found ya...been surfing the West coast!
Take care and get it done right ;)
Omigosh, that reminds me of what Geewits has been going through with her house in Texas :-)
It seems as soon as folks start ripping things up, "other" things become evident that need to be renovated, repaired, replaced.
Good luck! :-)
Hi Mary Anne, looking' good g'friend sitting on the edge of the tub hammering away! Wanna come on over and do mine now that you're experienced? Ha Ha, I'm sure you're thinking. I desperately need to reno my ensuite but am terrified that once it gets started I'll find black mould and all sorts of other problems. So I will wait until I can afford to have someone come in and do it for me. At least there is another full bathroom in the house I can use during the process. I'm sure you'll be thrilled with the finished product, though.
A little update.....hubby has been working very hard....he fixed the plumbing...replaced a lot of it...had
to cut a hole in the ceiling in the laundry room to get at it...but it is done...he has the tub in place and the new wall board up....the tiling around the tub will begin soon..he be the stone and tile guy that he is, he wants to do some creative style with the tile...I'll live that up to him. We decided we didn't like the floor tile and so we have to go and change that...but there is lots we can do first...so yes I will keep you posted...he is going good guns....with his bad shoulder and all....bless his heart....
we moved into a new house a yr ago! lol but we did have renos done in the old house to sell it...but my husband paid ppl to do it. he is gone about 10-12 hrs a day w work and commute time, and no way in hell i'm gonna do it myself. plus, we were in a time crunch lol
Look at you go. I hate when small jobs turn into long drawn out projects. Hope that isn't the case for you.
