What size am I?

Ok I don't get it....I just don't get it. I was just hanging my laundry on the line when I noticed something that just struck me as being funny in a strange sort of way. Sizing. Have any of you noticed that sizing has changed. Having just hung three pairs of sweat pants on the line I noticed everyone was a difference size and I wore every one of those pants over the past couple of days. The first one is what I would call a sweat pant... a heavier cotton from "Cotton Ginny" the size.....small... I've had these for years. Then there were my stretch cotton pants from Bebe sport.....size medium, just got them a month ago. And last my LuLu Lemon yoga pants.....large... my daughter bought those for me on my birthday last August.

Now I understand that Canadian sizes are different from American and European sizes. But shouldn't a small be a small and a medium be a medium and so on.....I have no idea what size I am anymore. I recognize that the type of material can affect the sizing....but by how much? So is it just me or is sizing changing? Seamstresses out there, what is your answer to this mystery. I find it all so very frustrating. Do men have this problem?

no i think it is the manufacturers. i recently ordered three pairs of slacks from jc penney and one fit, one was too small, and one was too large, all the same size!!!

I can't wear the same size even within the same brand some times. I think that quality control of sizing has fallen by the wayside.

I say forget sizes and just wear what is comfortable!
And yes, they screw with sized here in America...they call it vanity sizing...everyone wants to be smaller even though they aren't so companies accomodate!

Sizing is not uniform ANYWHERE! Not even in kids clothes.....Amber wears a size 7 in some things and a 10/12 in others. It's crazy....and I want to know how come the clothes I put away at the end of last summer actually shrunk in storage....LOL!

Hugs!

I think it's manufactors and stores in general. Some stores just have "different" ideas for sizing. There's one particular store that caters to anorexics I think...their larges are like a normal small size!

Men do not have this problem.

See the problem is in the US (and I assume Canada as well) there are no standardized womens sizes. What is say an American size 8 in one brand is a size 6 or 10 in another. It is left arbitrarily up to the clothing designer to decide.

It's usually why I end up getting so frustrated that I go to the men's department to buy my jeans. You can't mess with waist size and inseams.

I always have to get my pants altered, and it often depends on the cut. Some pants have wider legs, some have longer legs, etc., and yet they're all the same size. And sometimes, depending on the fabric, some pants stretch when you wear them and others don't. (I find the same thing with bras as well.)

i know exactly what you're talking about.

what kills me the most is when i go to a particular store and try on two pairs of jeans of the different style but same size... and one is too big and the other doesnt fit!

too crazy

I am inclined to wonder about this myself. I do know it's WHERE I buy them. If they're more costly I can buy the smaller sizes. If it's cheap brands like from Wal-Mart, then I need to go a size bigger.

Like all the others above me that say it's manufacturers, I think they're more close to being correct.

I do know that cotton can shrink, and anything with a bit of spandex shrinks in the wash, yet stretches when put on. So, really, who knows what's going on. LOL

Last year I bought - from the same store - two skirts that were relatively similar in cut. One was a size 12 the other a 16. Go figure.

You realize, of course, a discussion of women's clothing sizes can open up a big can of worms? Be that as it may, I know some brands run larger than others - I have a lot of difficulty lately finding any brands that run large enough it seems -but I think that is a different issue, isn't it?
Granted, fabric differences can cause some problems but even so, I don't think there is anything even close to uniformity in sizing - American or probably not Canadian either, though I have nothing to reference to with respect to Canadian sizes. Clothing selection can be a daunting enough task but when the sizes run -or seem to - such a gamut in dimensions, it makes it doubly difficult.

I agree with Miss Bee, I think it has to due with the manufacturers. Sometimes the quality control is lacking.

Men's sizing hasn't been an issue for me. On women's clothes I have noted a trend that sizing often depends on the exclusivity of the outlet. Identical items may have three different sizes, and the more expensive the store, the smaller the size.

I find that annoying, too! Every store has a different sizing method, it seems. A 10 at one store may be a 12 or an 8 at another!

Men are lucky. Their sizes go by inches. An inch is an inch. Simple. Why can't we do that, too?!

Is Tomcat saying he wear womens clothes?lol!
Yes i have the same problem over here too, within the same shop the size varies and its very very annoying!

Claire, I never wore women's clothes, except once on Halloween, but I have had a wife that would come home and proudly tell me she had saved me over $500. :-(

ugh isn't that annoying! My hubby never has to try anything on, just looks at the tag and they always fit.
My neighbour and her 16 year old daughter were over last night and we were talking about grad dresses and reminiscing on what size we were back then. I brought out my size 7 grad dress for her daughter to try on and it fit perfectly, which amazed the daughter who now wears a size 1!
