November the 11th. Remembrance Day in Canada and for my friends to the south of me it is Veteran's Day.In Canada we have a flower that marks this day and it is the poppy.
I remember as a child learning about the poem "In Flander's Field" it was written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army. He was a surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade. He was a new doctor and he wrote about his experience as a field surgeon.
In Flanders Field. I remember reciting this poem every Remembrance Day and as a class we would draw and colour pictures of poppies, and tape them to the class windows. We often would have a visit to the class by a Veteran, who would share stories of the war with us.
The poppy
Today thousands of veterans and families will gather to celebrate their loved ones lost in battle. We will dedicate a moment of silence in their remembrance. Our fellow country men and women who so bravely gave their lives so that we all my live in lands of peace and harmony.
I also think of our loved ones who are on current tour of duty and pray for their safe return home. I especially dedicate this blog today to my dear girlfriend Phoebe Carantes currenty stationed in Kandahar.

We will not forget. I had an uncle killed in WWII in the Battle of the Bulge right at the end of the war. We will not forget.
i had a grandpa that fought in the vietnam(spelling)war so I will not forget to honor those veterans.
Love the photo of the Poppy's, what a gorgeous shot! Will say a little prayer for Phoebe Carantes who is in Kandahar. What a nice tribute!
"Lest we never forget"
We should never forget..
Great post! In the U.S. we also use the Poppy flower! On this, Remembrance Day in Canada and Veteran's Day here, I will remember all the veterans and those currently serving to assure our freedom.
And I will also say a prayer for your friend, Phoebe's, safety and quick and safe return home!
My link about the poppy does recognize that is a flower of internation remembrance. I just found is so interesting the other day when I was watching a news cast and it was American soldiers who recognized the flower and didn't know it's significance. So then it made me second guess myself. Anyhow, no matter they are all in my thoughts today.
Wow what a great post and tribute! Love the pictures! We read In Flanders Fields outloud at school each Memorial Day.
I remember having to learn In Flander's Field by heart when in school and how proud I was to learn it had been written by a Canadian:-) We will never forget the sacrifices these men and women have made for us!!
Just popped by to say thank you for coming over to my site and wishing me birthday greetings, nice to meet you.
What beautiful photos. My grandson and I had a long chat today about the 1st and 2nd World Wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He is anti-war and wonders why they still go on. I wish I could answer his question.
Thank you for writing such a lovely post. I lost many family members in WWII. We shall never forget.
Mary Anne,
I never knew about this blog until my friend from Montreal told me.I remember sending you a short e mail while i was in Kandahar. Needless to say the experience i had inside the wire is something i will never forget. It was very busy when i was there, a lot of times not very pretty and a lot of times very sad. Thank you for remembering me in your prayers and i do appreciate all the good thoughts. I honestly believe it's those prayers and good thoughts that kept me safe while in theater. Take care and God bless !
