This weeks theme is Autumn Memory...................
One of the first things I recall about a fall memory is when I was a little girl going to school and the smell of apples and pears in my lunch bag...there was just something about that smell. Then came the smell of burning leaves after the hours of raking the leaves in the yard.
The wonderful colours of fall. The leaves turning to vibrant hue of yellows, orange and reds. The great times rolling in the mountains of raked leaves. The wonderful walks in the cool crisp fall morning air.
When my girls were little we would go for walks and collect leaves. We would bring their favourite leaves home and with my supervision we would press leaves in between two pieces of wax paper and then once they had melted together we would cut them into shapes and tape them to the windows. We loved to decorate for the fall, with garlands and gourds, harvest smelling candles, and of course the smell of baking.
With fall came canning. The girls would help me can beets, onions, and pickles. When we had the plum tree and rhubarb patch we made a lot of jams. Oh yes and let's not forget the berry picking and canning and freezing.
With fall we have Thanksgiving and Halloween, again a time for decorating and festivities. Two of my girls have birthdays in the fall, so along with all the other fall events birthday celebration are high on the list of things to celebrate and prepare for.
With fall, comes the storms. The winds really pick up in the fall and we have lots of power outages. But what I love is being close to the ocean and watching the waves come crashing in, the seagulls and eagles catching the wind and soaring high in the sky.
Here is a pictroal representation of what autumn is to me.....

Samples of canning, and pumpkin bread
The crazy storms on the west coast of the Island...the is a photo of the search and rescue boat doing a training session....I'd love to be on the bow of that boat....yahoo!!!Anyhow, those are memories of Autumn to me....

I tried canning one year -1976, to be exact -and things didn't work out to hot for me. Actually, things were too hot for the canner I suppose you could say, cause I fell asleep (big surprise, huh) one night with the canner on the burner and it boiled dry, which in turn, burst one of the jars then. Big mess, never again!
But your description of other things fall -especially the burning leaves -brings back lots of memories. So does the canning too for that matter but of my Mom and Grandma canning all kinds of fruits, vegetables, jellies and jams! Good scents all.
When I was growing up in Los Angeles there wasn't much different about fall (or winter or spring or summer for that matter). We just had smoggy times and less smoggy times. Well, it wasn't quite that bad, but it is nothing like living in a place that has true seasons. I love fall here in Powell River. The trees change colours, there gets to be a nip in the air and we can start up our wood stove again. I just love sitting in front of it to watch the flames and warm up on a cold night at the cabin. - Margy
I really enjoyed reading about your autumn memories. Are those asparagus pickled? Autumn is actually my favourite time of year because of the weather, my birthday and my older daughter's plus all the aromas of cooking what I call "comfort food" like shepherds pie, mac & cheese, and warm apple crumble for dessert. You have some awsome photos here!
I cannot say that I would love to be on the bow of the boat with you, but on everything else I would so love to join you. I missed out on canning this year and am so disappointed and I think the kids are too. We didn't make it to the apple orchard either. Great HoT this week and thanks for stopping by mine.
Your post captures the perfect essence of the Autumn season.. each and every part.
Me and Mike tried our hand at canning a little earlier in this year and had such fun and success we're going to do more next year. It'll be so nice in the depths of Winter to open up a jar of fresh green beans or applesauce. =)
Autumn seems to be one of my favorite seasons. The colors of the trees get to be so pretty. I would have taken more pictures on our vacation but we missed the fall colors by a few weeks. A good post.
I love your descriptive words. I am going to slide my eyes right by that boat photo as that is what my daughter does! She is in the Coast Guard. I tell her just not to let me in on all the details. LOL
What lovely autumn memories you have! :)
Looks like you did dilly beans. I did a small patch of them.
I forgot about fall harvest.
Mine is up and the coffee is on.
Stopping by to say hi and to let you know I gave you credit for the Horton funny in a new post. =)
What great memeories you have! Fall isn't as noticeable here in Texas as it is in many other places. The canning reminds me of my grandparents' place in Arkansas, though, with the beans, jams, etc. I miss them (not the jams, but my grandparents. LOL) I loved reaading this autumn memory!
I served at a Motor Lifeboat station in Bodega Bay, CA (US Coast Guard) and those training sessions were amazing, but even more amazing was actually using the skills learned in those training sessions to save a vessel and or a life.
Thank you for sharing this picture of your "Coast Guard."
