Hubby and I have always encouraged family members or friends to bring their dogs when they come for a visit. This summer was no exception. Our first guests brought their dog and that dog was with us for a month. Bert just loved having a buddy to play with.
It was so nice to see Bert jumping and runny about like a little puppy. It was great exercise for him and companionship. Hubby and I couldn't help but notice how much fun Bert had with the other dogs. It was so enjoyable to watch. It didn't take long to determine who was the Alpha dog, and for Bert to lay the ground rules for the other dogs.
In observing Bert's interactions with the dogs, hubby and I realized how much Bert would benefit from having a full time companion.
This isn't a decision we take lightly. It's a big responsibility. Many things need to be considered. Like the
temperament of the other dog, and would the other dog be compatible with our dear Bert. Another consideration, because of my allergies I really need to minimize the dog hair....so a non shedding dog would be great. I also want a dog that has a friendly temperament. Many of my colleagues at work have dogs and some have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to dogs. Today for example I just so happened to mention to our clerk at work about what kind of dog I would like and the next thing I knew she was showing me pictures of dogs that she thought would be appropriate for us.
The dog that caught my eye was the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier....what a darling dog
Isn't that the most cuddly looking dog? I think so. My problem lies with the fact that I really don't want to get it from a breeder, but rather from a rescue. I think there are enough homeless dogs out there that I shouldn't have to go to a breeder. We got our dear Bert from the SPCA, Bert had been abandon when he was a pup and needed a home. Getting Bert was one of the best decisions hubby and I have made. We would like to provide a home to a dog who really needs a home. So we are on the search for a resuce facility which is not to far from home. I think that might be a tall order.Getting a pet is a serious matter. One that shouldn't be taken lightly. I look at it like this; when you decide you want to start a family you think long and hard about the pros and cons , you realize that you are making a life altering decision. I believe the same principles apply when you are considering getting a pet.
So the search is on....We want a dog that will be compatible with our life style and us with their temperament, and that Bert will enjoy being around. Tall order I know......but wish us luck!

Oh I do wish you luck! We'd love to get a dog, too, but we can't afford it right now and I think we need to focus on "us" for a while. I've always had boxers and L used to have an Irish setter. So we thought we'd compromise with a yellow lab. But they're so BIG! Anyway, I hope you find what you're looking for. :D
Twice a week the Peak advertises SPCA dogs needing adoption. I'll keep my eyes open for you. We aren't that far away. - Margy
Sure, the purebreds are beautiful and all that but often they are also a bit on the "flighty" side too, whereas a good old fashioned "Heinz 57" is frequently a very calm and also, often a very loving as well as lovable dog too! Every dog I've ever owned was a "mutt" of some type and gave us very few problems. You're so right too about giving this a lot of thought, planning, preparation as it is bringing another member into your family and it's no different than when thoughts run about adding a child or another child into one's home too. Same type of responsibilities apply. Here's hoping you find something through an animal rescue group that will fill the bill for you! And just think how you will be helping that animal then too to have a stable, loving home.
Yes, good luck in finding the right dog for you and hubby and dear Bert! We were given a 3/4 chocolate lab 1/4 austrailian shephard by our youngest son and his wife. Their pure-bred yellow lab had a litter of 13 and it's kind of hard to sell 13 puppies before they eat you out of house and home. There was no way we could refuse a gift! Her name is Cocoa and she joined our family and 7 year old dog, Prancer. Prancer hated her for the first few weeks and then tolerated her for the next few weeks. Now the play and romp together both inside and out, although I try to put a damper on the inside romping. They are both over 50 pounds now and the Cocoa is 10 months old and I'm hoping she is full grown..........but from the size of her feet I still think she has a way to go. Two dogs is harder than one..........especially when one is a pup! Hugs my friend!
Best of luck with the search. I love the shots you included in this post. I was also glad to see you had a good Thanksgiving.
I'm sure you'll find just the right companion for Bert. :)
